Writer-producer Daniel H. Birman is producing a one-hour special for National Geographic Channel that considers new theories about the Universe. Recently Birman completed Europa: Mystery of the Ice Moon, a one-hour special for the Science Channel, and prior to that, Medical Maverick — two one-hour shows for Discovery Health Channel. He is producing Nowhere to Run, a documentary feature about the psychological complexity affecting a 16-year-old girl who committed murder. Birman produced the four-part program The Team, the first-ever nonfiction series for Nickelodeon and the Tom Lynch Company; the Discovery Health series Alternatives: Uncovered; and Chopper Rescue, a pilot for Discovery Health. Formerly a producer for Lifetime Medical Television, Birman also worked with Brookfield Productions on the NBC special The Day My Kid Went Punk and the ABC After School Special The Donna Cheek Story on NBC, among others. Birman is on the faculty at USC’s Annenberg School of Journalism, is a frequent speaker and panelist on the subject of nonfiction writing and producing. Birman helped build the nonfiction peer group as one of the largest peer groups within the Television Academy. He currently chairs the By-Laws Committee, has served as Secretary, chaired the Ethics Committee and is an active member of the Primetime Awards Committee and the Television Academy Foundation Education Committee.

Shari Cookson is an Emmy Award-nominated nonfiction filmmaker. Her latest film, All Aboard! Rosie’s Family Cruise (HBO), received three Primetime Emmy nominations, with Cookson nominated for Outstanding Nonfiction Special and for directing. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won a GLAAD Award for best documentary. Cookson’s HBO film Living Dolls: The Making of a Child Beauty Queen received five Emmy Award nominations and won for editing. Her work has appeared on HBO for over a decade, and includes Skinheads USA, which earned her a DGA nomination. Other credits include Lifetime’s Signature Series, which was named one of cable television’s top five series by Gannett News Service, ABC’s Christmas Miracles and On Campus, for which she won a Los Angeles Area Emmy. A graduate of USC, Cookson received the Television Academy’s college documentary award for her student film Gunshot. She is a founding partner in the production company Sceneworks.
