Buck Kartalian was a character actor best known for his role as gorilla Julius, the Keeper of the Cages, in the original 1968 film Planet of the Apes. Kartalian’s character was in charge of security at the Research Complex for studying humans. He later played a gorilla named Frank in the 1972 sequel Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.
He also had roles on the television series Naked City, The Untouchables, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Get Smart, The Munsters, McHale’s Navy, Batman, The Wild Wild West, Here Comes the Brides, The New Perry Mason, Monster Squad, Lou Grant, Cagney & Lacey, Friends, The Jamie Foxx Show, ER, Felicity, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Even Stevens, Just Shoot Me! and How I Met Your Mother.
Kartalian was also known for his role as the “champion eater” inmate Dynamite in the film Cool Hand Luke, starring Paul Newman. He played a shopkeeper in Clint Eastwood's The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Kartalian died May 24, 2016, in Mission Hills, California. He was 93.
