Dick Gautier an actor and comedian who got his start in standup comedy, achieved success on Broadway, and went on to a long and varied career in television. To TV audiences, he was perhaps best known for the role of Hymie the robot on the popular 1960s espionage farce Get Smart.
Born in southern California, Gautier began performing standup comedy in the mid-1950s. In 1960, while working as a nightclub comic in New York, he was cast in the Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie, which starred Dick Van Dyke. For his performance as an Elvis Presley-like singer, Gautier earned a Tony nomination, which led to steady work as an actor.

His long list of television credits included Ensign Pulver, Gidget, The Patty Duke Show, Bewitched, The Flying Nun, Love, American Style, Bancek, The Rockford Files, Marcus Welby, M.D., Murder, She Wrote, The Love Boat, Happy Days, Fantasy Island, Alice, Matlock, Nip/Tuck and many others.
In addition to his memorable recurring role on Get Smart, Gautier starred in When Things Were Rotten, a short-lived comedy series about Robin Hood and his Merry Men, which aired on ABC in 1975.
He also appeared on several game shows and, later in his career, provided voices for a number of animated series, including G.I. Joe, The Smurfs, The Transformers and DuckTales.
His feature films included Divorce American Style and Fun With Dick and Jane.
Gautier died on January 13, 2017, in Arcadia, California. He was 85.
