Liz Smith

Liz Smith was a journalist best known for her gossip column which appeared, at its high point, in about 75 papers around the world and was read by as many as 50 million people each day.

Smith began her column at the New York Daily News in 1976 and went on to write for New York Newsday and the New York Post, among others.

In 1979, Smith began a 15-year run as a regular on the landmark WNBC-TV afternoon news program Live at Five, and won a Daytime Emmy Award for her work.

Smith also appeared on The Mike Douglas Show, The Howard Stern Show, Good Day New York, American Masters, Behind the Music, The Roseanne Show, 60 Minutes, Larry King Live, Rachael Ray, The View, Entertainment Tonight and Frontline.

She also made appearances as herself on episodes of The Nanny, Murphy Brown and Ugly Betty.

Additionally, she appeared in the films The Fan, Garbo Talks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Smurfs, as well as the documentaries Marilyn Monroe: Life After Death and Everything Is Copy.

Smith died November 12, 2017, in New York. She was 94.
