Monty Hall

Monty Hall was the host and co-creator of Let’s Make a Deal, appearing on more than 4,700 episodes of the popular game show. In 1975, he was recognized for his work with a Daytime Emmy nomination in the category of outstanding host.

The show, which premiered in 1963, featured contestants in an audience trying to attract Hall’s attention with crazy costumes and signs. Once chosen, the contestant could gamble and pick a hidden prize, or they could choose to take a wad of cash from Hall’s jacket pocket.

A native of Canada, Hall got his start in entertainment during his high school years, when he worked as an emcee of Canadian Army shows during World War II. He began his TV career in 1953 when he hosted Floor Show, a summer program for the CBC.

Over the course of his career, Hall also served as a panelist or contestant on The Hollywood Squares, Password All-Stars and Password Plus and hosted episodes of The Joey Bishop Show and Star’s Table.

He also appeared on episodes of the series That Girl; Love, American Style; The Love Boat; The Nanny; Providence and That ‘70s Show, as well as the television movie Li’l Abner.

In addition to Let’s Make a Deal, Hall also served as a producer on the series Chain Letter, Split Second, Masquerade Party, The McLean Stevenson Show and It’s Anybody’s Guess.

In 2013, he received a lifetime achievement award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Hall died September 30, 2017, in Beverly Hills, California. He was 96.
