Olympia Dukakis was an American actress.

She is perhaps best known for her Oscar-winning role as Rose Castorini in Moonstruck (1987) and for her part as Clairee Belcher in Steel Magnolias (1989).

Dukakis also had memorable roles in Working Girl (1988), Look Who’s Talking (1989), Look Who’s Talking Too (1990), I Love Trouble (1994), Mighty Aphrodite (1995), Mr. Holland’s Opus (1995), Picture Perfect (1997), and In the Land of Women (2007).

The theater veteran began her on-screen career with a guest starring role in the television series The Doctors and the Nurses. She would go on to have recurring roles in Search for Tomorrow, Center of the Universe, Bored to Death, Sex & Violence, Forgive Me, TripTank, Switch, and Tales of the City.

Dukakis was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards: twice for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work in Lucky Day (1991) and Joan of Arc (1999), and once for Lead Actress for More Tales of the City (1998).

Dukakis died May 1, 2021, in New York City, New York. She was 89.
