Robert Vitarelli

Robert Vitarelli was a news director best known for his work on the CBS Evening News with anchormen Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather, as well as Face the Nation with moderator George Herman.

Vitarelli began his career at CBS in 1953 in the company’s mailroom, rising through the network ranks until his retirement in 1992.

Over the course of his career he also directed programs including Nightwatch, CBS This Morning, The Kalb Report and the “Point-Counterpoint” debate segment on 60 Minutes.

Vitarelli died July 30, 2017, in The Villages, Florida. He was 86.
