Sylvia Anderson

Sylvia Anderson was a British writer and voice actress best known for co-creating (with her husband Gerry) the U.K. children’s action series Thunderbirds. The show ran from 1964 to 1966 and utilized puppetry along with scale model special effects. The series, which achieved cult status in Britain, centered on the Tracys, a family of adventurers who respond to disasters through their international rescue service.

Anderson also wrote for the U.K. series Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Joe 90, The Secret Service, The Protectors and UFO, as well as the series Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Space: 1999, and Thunderbirds Are Go, which were made in the U.K., but also aired in the U.S. Additionally, she worked on a string of television movies starring Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, including Journey Through the Black Sun, Alien Attack, Destination Moonbase-Alpha and Cosmic Princess.

She also provided the voice for one of the central characters in Thunderbirds, Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward, an English aristocrat who heads up a network of undercover agents. She provided additional voice work for many of her other series, including Supercar, Fireball ZL5, Stingray, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Joe 90 and The Secret Service.

For 30 years she also worked as a U.K. talent scout for HBO.

Anderson died March 15, 2016, in Bray, Berkshire, England. She was 88.
