The Archives, housed in UCLA's Department of Theatre Arts since
1965, are a central responsibility of the Academy Foundation.
Through the continuing efforts of the Foundation's board of directors,
members of the Academy, other individuals, and the networks, the
ATAS/UCLA Television Archives now contain the largest and most
varied collection of
kinescopes, tapes and films from the earliest days of television
to this year's Emmy Awards telecast of any non-governmental archive
in the country.
The holdings, stored under optimum archival conditions, have been
catalogued. Exchange programs with other archives have already
begun. The Archives,
open by appointment to researchers and scholars from within and
without the industry, are underwritten by support from UCLA and
the Academy of Television, both organizations
fully realizing the importance of preserving our television heritage.
The
Academy continues to maintain a separate relationship with the UCLA Film & Television
Archives in regard to videotapes and kinescopes of classic TV programs.
