ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES ANNOUNCES
"THE TELEVISION ACADEMY HONORS"
AWARDS TO RECOGNIZE “TELEVISION WITH A CONSCIENCE”
North Hollywood, CA, Dec. 13, 2007 The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is launching "THE TELEVISION ACADEMY HONORS" to recognize “television with a conscience,” achievements in programming that present issues of concern to society in a compelling, emotional and insightful way, it was announced today by Dick Askin, Chairman and CEO of the Television Academy.
An outgrowth of the Television Academy’s Television Cares Committee, these new awards will be presented at a star-studded event at the Beverly Hills Hotel, slated for April 22, 2008.
The Television Academy has a long history of honoring those who give back to the community, through the annual Governor’s Award and more recently, the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award. According to Askin, “Television Honors is a natural outgrowth of the Television Academy’s desire to honor and recognize those programs that make a significant social and cultural impact, and consequently make a difference in our lives.”
“The Television Academy Honors” is being created and shepherded by the Academy’s Television Cares Committee, chaired by John Shaffner, Television Academy Chairman and CEO–elect, and Television Cares Committee co-chair and screenwriter Lynn Roth. “The Television Academy Honors is separate and distinct from the Primetime Emmy's recognition of television excellence,” said Shaffner. “We envision this as a way to celebrate programming that enlightens and educates, creates awareness and instigates positive change regarding a wide range of social and health issues.”
Eligible programs are those airing from January 1, 2007 through December 31, 2007. Entries can be submitted beginning January 7, 2008 through February 4, 2008 to the Television Academy’s Awards Department. The honorees will be announced on March 11. Entries may be submitted for fiction/nonfiction as a whole series, a single episode or for a story arc up to three episodes. There is a limit of one entry per series. Made for television movies, miniseries or fiction/nonfiction specials are also eligible to apply for The Television Academy Honors. For each entry there is a processing fee of $100.
