Delighting in Diversity

Photographs by Invision

When they found their gowns for the 67th Emmys, television’s head turners couldn’t have known that history would be made that night — that their colleague, Viola Davis, star of How to Get Away with Murder, would become the first African American named outstanding lead actress in a drama.

But perhaps they guessed? Because their fashion passions, as revealed on the red carpet at L.A.’s Microsoft Theater, delighted in diversity.

Then again, these stunners could have been inspired by the marvelous multitude that was television last season — an array of riches that left viewers desperate for more capacious DVRs and just more time to watch.

Or maybe it was simply that familiar, pleasing puzzle: how to go for the glam during L.A.’s late-summer scorcher — temps that would touch triple digits and cause hand-held fans, old-fashioned and battery-operated, to become the number-one accessory.

Whatever the reason, this year’s red-carpet charmers hardly walked in lockstep. Of course, many made their statement in classic black or white, but there was no missing those unexpected colors — lemon yellow or the flush of fuchsia, among others.

But unusual hues were not the only way to stand out. The varied styles were matched only by the surprising plot twists on Davis’s ABC drama. From sleekly modern to sweetly romantic, this couture was nothing less than a call for Vive la difference!  Fashion watchers were wowed, in turn, by unusual cuts-outs, metallics, embellishments, all sorts of asymmetric looks — and, yes, pants.

Again this year, all of the red-carpet ruckus was captured by Invision, the photo agency of the Television Academy, at both the September 20 live telecast and the Creative Arts Emmys on September 12. Their images appear in the pages of this month's emmy magazine.

For many, the biggest surprise at the telecast was Lady Gaga’s understated Grace Kelly–inspired gown.

And isn’t that just as it should be? Her hit “Born This Way” could have been the anthem of this refreshing red carpet: There’s nothing wrong with loving who you are…hold your head up girl and you’ll go far.
