Me and My Emmy: Marina Toybina

From Russia to the Super Bowl, Marina Toybina has follwed her passion for fashion and beauty.

Primetime Emmy Tally: Four

How She Got the Gold: All for outstanding costumes in a variety program: NBC’s Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show Starring Katy Perry (2015), with assistant costume designer Courtney Webster; Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance (2014), with costume supervisor Grainne O’Sullivan; The 55th Annual Grammy Awards on CBS (2013); Fox’s The X Factor (2012), again with Grainne O’Sullivan.

Now for the Noms: Toybina has won every time she was nominated.

True Hue: “Fashion was my first love, my true reason and interest for designing. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, I started experimenting with my own clothing line and ended up doing custom work for stylists, magazines and music artists. [Later] I took a risk and chose to focus on costume design for music artists, award shows, world tours, large-scale stage productions and musically inclined TV shows.”

Child’s Play: “Growing up in Russia, I admired all things of beauty. I loved going to the theater, being part of performing-arts studios and experimenting with my mom’s closet. I always paid close attention to detail. I was a hands-on, artsy type of a kid.”

Dream Dance: “Last season [on SYTYCD], we had two group performances that simply took my breath away. What made [the costumes] so significant was the execution of each design, the richness of fabrics that were used, the attention to detail and of course the handcrafting that went into finishing each piece. It’s the rush and the creative chaos that make me fall in love with what I do.”

Love, Actually: “I am exactly where I am supposed to be and doing what I’m supposed to be doing.”
